M335 Manual Introduction 9
2 Introduction
2.1 Description
The M335 blackbody calibration source is a general purpose high temperature source which
provides a very rapid heat-up time of only 30 minutes to reach 1200 C. A self-tuning digital PID
controller with adjustable set point holds the temperature to within 1 C.
The Model M335 blackbody calibration source design achieves significant weight and size
reduction over the M330 series with only minor sacrifices in specification and performance,
making it an ideal unit where portability is required or space is limited. The cavity combined
with radiance calibration yields an emissivity of 1.0 over the temperature range of 300 to
1500 °C with an aperture of 16mm. An integrally mounted PID controller completes this versatile
calibrator.
2.1.1 Accuracy
Typical accuracy of the after radiometric calibration is ±0.4% ±1 °C of reading. Please refer to
the NIST traceable calibration report for the measurement uncertainties and controller setpoint
corrections (systematic corrections).
The M335 Blackbody Calibration Furnace has been thoroughly tested at factory prior to
shipment.
Every 300 to 400 hours of operation check the accuracy of temperature calibration at several
points throughout the range. This test is very important because the control thermocouple will
gradually lower its output causing the temperature to increase. A running log of the calibration
should be maintained by your standard department.
